THE WELLINGTON MURDER.
(Bt Telegraph) WELLINGTON, June 10. The Jury empanelled to enquire into the cause of death of Thomas Hawkings, whose body was found on the night of tho 31st May near his house covered with gunshot wounds and stabs, resumed their labours to-day : Mr Bunney, solicitor who appeared for Louis Ohemis, the man arrested on suspicion, suggested ihat in fairness to his client no further evidence should 1# 'taken, but that the Jury should return an open verdict, leaving further investigation for the Magisterial Court on Friday next to which day Chemis was remanded. Mr Bell who appeared for the Crown acquiesced, inasmuch as any additional evidence proposed to be offered that day would be merely a corroboration of that already given. The coroner agreeing that an open verdict would meet the ends of justice summed up, pointing out that deceased’s death was undoubtedly duo to the acts of a murderer.
Tho jury found a verdict that Hawkings was murdered by some person unknown.
