A Lesson for Insurance Companies.

(Bt Telegraph. ) WAIPAWA, Mat 23. An enquiry held yesterday into the fire which destroyed the old Waipawa Hotel, is remarkable for the rider added by the jury to tho verdict, which was : “ There is no evidence before the jury as to how the fire originated." The rider says: “The jury are of opinion that the proper time to raise the question of value is when the proposal is made for insurance, but that when a company accepts a proposal and takes the premium, it should in all fairness when fire occurs pay up and not raise the question of over-insurance.” The jury was composed of some leading business men, and they resented beirg forced to sitjjall day, not to find out how the fire originated, but to discover the value of the premises burnt. The campany interested was the North British and Mercantile.
