Mount Peel Road Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the board ivas held in the road board office, Peel Forest, on Friday the I6th inst. There were present —The Hon. J, B. A. Acland (chairman), Messrs Robert Mackay, R. Thew, G. 0. Dennistoun, and A, Hawdon.
Mr Dennislaun proposed, Mr Mackay seconded, and it was carried —" That Mr Tripp’s letter of the 27th April, held over at the last meeting of the board, be the first business of this meeting." The letter was read, in which he stated that his reasons for not coming forward as a candidate for a seat on the board was owing to the board refusing to consent to the survey of the road deviations on the Mount Peel road, and having the land at present used as a road transferred to the board He considered that in justice to the ratepayers this ought to be done, as at present the board was liable for any accident that might occur on the new road or on the abandoned one.
A letter was read from Mr Acland, stating that, as owner of the land taken for the deviation of road, he had never objected to giving a title to the board, but as a member of the board he considered it an unnecessary expenditure of the ratepayers’ money as the public had acquired a right to the road from having used it for tho_ last ten or twelve years.
Mr Thew said that there was nothing before the board tp discuss, as the question had never been brought before it in a formal manner.
After considerable discussion it was proposed by Mr Thew, seconded by Mr Dennistoun, - and carried—“ That Mr Tripp be informed that there is no mention in the minutes of him or any ratepayer havin j brought the matter before the board in a formal manner to have the road conveyed to the board. At the meeting of the board held on the 18th April at which Mr Tripp was present, although much discussion took place, no resolution to have the road surveyed was moved by any member.” A letter was read from Mr Tripp in reference to certain work done by him in preventing the overflow of the creek near his house, lie had used several casks of cement on the work, and if the board would pay for the cement he would pay all labour. The overseer reported upon the nature and extent of the work done. It was proposed by Mr Denniston, seconded by Mr Mackay, and carried— "■ That Mr Tripp be requested to send in an account of the amount paid by him for the seven casks of cement used on protective works, when a cheque for the amount will be forwarded him."
It was proposed by Mr Dennistoun, seconded by Mr Mackay and carried—“ That after hearing the overseer’s opinion on the protective works erected on the creek below Mr Tripp’s house the board is of opinion that no further money be spent on the said works.” A letter was read from Mr G. J. Dennistoun consenting to the road down Bethune’s cutting being closed.
The clerk was instructed to write to Messrs Smithson and Raymond, asking whether the dedication of the road leading through the Timaru Borough Council’s reserve to Mr Hitch’s land lias been completed. Accounts amounting to £lO9 Os 4d were passsd for pay ment. 'lhe board then rose.
