Lord Carrington absolutely denies that he intends resigning the Governorship of New South Wales. A CONFESSION.
The Government have received information that the woman upon whom the man Buttner committed a criminal assault for which he was sentenced to death is of bad repute, The woman has confessed to having encouraged Buttner, and the Government have, therefore, decided to commute the death sentence, (Received J. 25 a.m., May 18th.) TOTAL LOSS OF A BARQUE. Sydney, May 17.
News received from Singapore states that the Norwegian barque Norway, bound from Singapore to New York, had foundered on the passage, but fortunately the crew reached Mauritius in safety.
THE ROTOMAHANA. Sailed—Rotomahana, for Auckland,
SERIOUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT, Melbourne, May 17.
Owing to a point on the North Melbourne railway line being left open three carriages of the Williamstown train were derailed, and fell over on their side. Twelve persona were injured, two seriously.
