Waimate County Council.

A meeting of the above council was held on Wednesday last. Present Messrs McLaren (in the chair) Oliver, Murphy, Slee, Manchester, and Hardie. Iho following correspondence was dealt with. Letters were “ received ” from Messrs Steward and Turnbull, M.H.E’s, re amendment to Timaru High School Act. From Mr John Douglas, Waihao Downs, re shingling Serpentine Valley road. A petition from settlors on tho Pareora asked for a road through farms 100 and 97 1 to be shingled. —Overseer to report. From Messrs Morton and Louden stating that they had ceased to occupy reserve No. 673 Otaio, and would not pay any more rates thereupon. / Mr J. Young, St Andrews, asked for permission to erect a verandah in front of hia premises.—Granted, subject to supervision of the overseer. It was decided to recommend Mr R. H. Ehodcs for the vacant seat on the Timaru High School Board.

Messrs Perry and Perry asking for £SO damages on account of Mr and Mrs T. Mercer.—“Eeceived.”

The opinions of Messrs J. W. White, and of Messrs Perry and Perry were received respecting the liability for tho Upper Pareora bridge, and it was decided to send both opinions to the Government and obtain their interpretation of what constitutes an “ approach ” to a bridge. It was resolved to accede to the request re resting tho recreation reserve in parsonage paddock, provided the cost of vesting is not charged to the council. Messrs Manchester, Sice, Havolie, Oliver, and Murphy were appointed to draw up Bylaws to control heavy traffic, to report to next meeting. Other resolutions were passed That tenders be invited for the county engine, which is now lying idle ; that H miles of the main road up the Waitaki from Glenavy bo shingled, the overseer and members for tho riding to select the portions to be made ; the overseer to erect footbridges in the Lower Waihao, to enable children to attend the Glenavy school, cost not to exceed £lO. The following decisions were arrived at on the overseer’s recommendations : —Tenders to be called for Jackson’s road ; the bridge near Mr Teachemaker’s to be taken .away and a ford substituted.

There were no tenders for metalling Serpentine Yallcy Boad, and the clerk was instructed to call for freeh tenders. The the tender of Johnston and Kirkcaldy £3B 5s 4d for metalling Milne’s Road, Hakateramea, was accepted. Mr' Healey was the only tenderer for the Waimate pound at £l2 per year, and this was accepted. No tenders were received for the St. Andrew pound, and it was resolved to ask the present poundbeeper to make an application. Accounts amounting to £609 18s 9d wore passed for payment and tho meeting terminated.
