Annual Election of School Committees.

Dawe, T.Mitchell, , and D. Hennessy, | WINCHESTER. ■ The annual meeting of householders was held on the 23rd at 7 pan. Mr A. W. Ensor was voted to the chair. The report and balance sheet for the year having been read and adopted, nominations for a new committee were taken with the result that the following were elected : —Dcßenzy 33 ; Connelly 32 ; Harrison 26; Ensor 23 ; .Albert 22 ; Woodley 20 ; Bishop 17. At a meeting of the committee subsequently hold, Mr W. Doßenzy was re-elected chairman. The monthly meetings were fixed as before—the lust Monday in each month. WAIMATE. (The annual meeting of househoulders for the purpose of electing a School Committee for the ensuing year was held at the school house on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance. Mr A. Watt was voted to the chair. The retiring committee’s report was read, also the advertisement calling the meeting, and the chairman stated that if any househoulder wanted any information in connection with the report, ho was prepared to supply it. After a few unimportant questions had been asked, tire ballot for the new committee was proceeded with. Messrs Slee and Goldsmith were appointed scrutineers. After a largo number of nominations had been made the following names were selected, and then balloted for, the result being as follows : W. Pttitt 37 j J. Opie 29 ; J. i?haw 24 ;W. J, Black 24 ; G. Harding 20 ; A. Watt 19 ; If. Watts 13 ; 8. Collett 9. A meeting of the newly elected committee was then held, and Mr A. Watt was elected chairman. Mr Black wished the chairman every success, and trusted the committee would be in as good a position next term as they were at present. It was decided to hold the meetings on the third Thursday in the month. Mr Graham, the secretary, stated that he could not see his way to act for the committee any longer. He had been secretary to the different committees for tho last fifteen years. Several committeemen referred to the satisfactory manner in which Mr Graham had at all times carried out his duties as secretary, and regretted that he could not see his way to act for another term. A resolution was carried that a vote of thanks to Mr Graham for his services be recorded on the minutes. Messrs A. Watt and H. Watts were then appointed visitors for the month, and the meeting terminated.

UPPER PAREOBA. The annual meeiing of householders in Pareora school district took place in tho schoolroom on Tuesday evening. Mr Thomas Priest occupied the chair, and read tho report of the retiring committee, which was considered highly satisfactory and adopted. The election of the new committee was then proceeded with. The following gentlemen were, duly nominated and seconded, and the ballot resulted as follows : —T. Jefcoate 18; J. Blruthers 18; J. Campbell 16 ; J. Paterson 16 ; D. Caird la ; J. E. Black 11; W. Osborne 7 ; I. Wilkins 0. The first seven wore declared duly elected and with a vote of thanks to the chairman tho meeting closed. A meeting of the new committee was held immediately after the election. With the exception of Mr Jefcoate all tho members were present. Mr John Struthcrs was unanimously elected chairman for the ensuing year. The following resolutions wore passed : —" That the committee meetings be held on last Monday of each month at 7.30 p.m.” “That the chairman and Mr Blank sign cheques.” “Thatthe chairman procure the necessary coal and firewood.” “ That Pareora Sunday School Committee get the use of the schoolroom for a concert on tho evening of May 17th.” “ That Mr John Campbell be visitor 'for tho ensuing month.” " < ' • SOUTH EANGITATA. A meeting of householders was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening. Mr McNaughton, chairman of committee, was voted to the chair. The yearly report was adopted as read, on the motion of Mr Waller, seconded by Mr Looker. As only six householders were present, it was resolved that the chairman write to the Board of Education asking either to call another householders’ meeting or appoint commissioners. The meeting then adjourned with a vote of thanks to the chairman. TEMUKA. The annual meeting of householders took place at 7 o’clock. At the commencement of the meeting only fifteen householders were present. Tho committee’s report, under the head of staff stated the changes that had been made during tho year. Another change was about to occur, Mr Kalaugher having resigned his post, for which Mr McLeod,a former apprentice to the school, had been recommended. Tho average attendance during the past year had been : boys 144 6, girls 124 3, total 268.9. At tho last examination 13 secondary pupils were presented as against 10 in 1887, and during the March quarter this year there were 13 pupils receiving secondary instructions. Tho buildings were in fair repair. The committee bad had 16 meetings during tho year at which the attendance of members had been good. Tho committee commenced their dulies with a credit balance of los lOd and had now a credit of 9s 9d. During the year £l4 lls 4d was collected for fuel and stationery as against £l9 Is 3d the year before. It was desirable tbat parents and guardians should be prompt in their payments to this fnnd. Thejlnspector’s report might be considered extremely good, noting a general and decided improvement on previous years. At tho last annual meeting the prize fund was in credit £lO 12s 7d. Prizes had been distributed costing £lO lls 6d, the cost of which was met by donations from Mr Rhodes, the CaledoniauJSocioty, and the proceeds of a concert, leaving the fund still £lO 12s 7d in credit, after placing £2 18s 5d to tho general account.

The balance sheet showed tho receipts amounted to £62 5s Id —consisting of balance to credit 15s lOd ; incidental grant £43 19s Gd ; fuel and stationery fees £t4 lls 4cl, and balance of proceeds of concert £2 18i sd. The°expendituro was : janitor £3O, secretary £6 5s ; repairs, elc. £7 2s 3d ; stationery £9 Os 6d ; fuel £8 12s Id ; printing and stationery 15s 6.1 j total £6l 15s 4d; thus leaving a credit balance of Os 9d. The report and balance sheet were unanimously adopted, and a vote of thanks passed to tho retiring coinmittep. In returning thanks the chairman said that it had been an uphill fight to make both ends meet, the receipts from the various sources having been so much less than during the previous year.

Mr Hayhurst was elected chairman of the householders’ meeting. The election of a committee was next proceeded witli and resulted as follows J, Blylh 50 ; W. Storey 47 ; A. R. Allan 31 ; K. F. Gray 28 j J. T. M. Hayhurst 26 ; E. Brown 21; W. G. Rutland 19 ; J, Cooper 19 ; A. Russell 16. •

Messrs Rutland and Cooper Laving polled an equal number of votes for seventh place, it was proposed to test tho feeling of the meeting by balloting tbe two names again, but Mr Cooper resigned in Mr Rutland's favour,

J ( and the chairman then declared the first I' seven on the list duly elected. f Tho meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman and scrutineers. At the meeting of the new committee immediately afterwards Mr Hayhurst was unanimously re-elected chairman. Mr Ashwell was reappointed secretary, and the meetings were fixed as before, for the third 1 Tuesday in each month, at 730 pm. at the secretary’s office. PLEASANT POINT.

There was a good attendance and a most harmonious meeting. The Rev. W. White, chairman of the late committee, presided, and read the annual report of the outgoing committee, which showed that last year a deficiency of £lB 4s 2d bad to be faced, and that by contributions from parents £6 2s fid, proceeds of concert £5 ss, and liberal donations of £3 from Mr A. E, H. Rhodes, M.H.R., and £2 from Mr Acton, the liabilities had been reduced to £ll 13s. Tho teaching staff had been materially assisted by Miss Donella Sutherland. The average for tho vear was 147, and the number on the registers 202. On the motion of Mr Welsh, seconded by Mr Kennedy, a unanimous and cordial vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing committee for their services. Before proceeding to tho election some discussion took place re ways and means, and it was decided that parents be again asked to contribute 2s fid for each child, and that the new management should bo asked to use every effort to remove tho debt. Eight persons were proposed, and the following elected—lT. Posset 57 ; J- Cartwright 43; ;W. Lund 27 ; Rev W. White 26 ; J, Grcig 24 ; W. Qibssn 23 ; Kennedy 20. The Rev W. White was re-elected chairman of the new committee. RANGITATA STATION. At the annual meeting of householders the attendance was far below that of previous years, and a great lack of interest prevailed The retiring chairman read his report for the year, and congratulated the householders on the success that had attended their school in the past year. Tho election resulted as follows : —Messrs A.Chalmers, G. Winter, J. Friers, A.Edgar, H.Coulter, G.Webb, and T. Lewis. The last named gentleman was e--1 Iccted chairman. Both the outgoing committee and the householders were unanimous in their expression of a full appreciation of the service of their late chairman, Mr A. McNevin, who had done a good deal towards fostering a co-operative feeling among those who take an interest in the school. Owing to his departure for B'cotland,- he was unable to stand for reelection, but they all wished him “ bon voyage ” and a speedy return.
