FireGisdoene, August 1. Early this morning a fire broke out in a store at Mokarakara, four miles from Gisborne. It was owned by Mr L. D. Nathan of Auckland, and was occupied by Mr D, Murohie, formerly of Invercargill. The place was completely gutted, and nothing was saved. It is supposed the fire was caused by a spark from the fireplace or a piece of wood falling out. The insurances on the stock are: Victoria* £IOOO ; South British, £500; Standard, £SOO. The building was insured by Mr Nathan for £550 in an office unknown. Committed for TrialWellington, August 1.

Mrs Warkworth, recently arrived here £rom Timaru, was to-day committed for trial,lon a charge of stealing a box of wearing apparel, the propelty of a fellow-passenger.

New LighthouseMr Blackett has returned from a visit of inspection to the lighthouse at French Pass. Proposed New TheatreTwo thirds of the capital required for the erection of a new theatre on the site of the old Opera House, has been subscribed, and a company will at once be formed to undertake its erection. Narrow Escape. A man named Henry Pratten Sterling, from Kaikoura, had a narrow escape of drowning early this morning. While drunk he fell off the breastwork, and was rescued by a constable, in a very exhausted condition. His legs had become entangled in kelp. “ Hansard ” ReportersMr Drake, of the New Zealand “Hon■»rd” staff, left for Sydney last night to take up a position on the “ Hansard ” staff in that colony, at a salary of £450 per annum. Mr G. Adams succeeds Mr Fisher on the “Hansard” staff. The other vacancy is not yet filled. Serious AccidentThomas Smith, a fireman on one of the trains, had a narrow escape from being killed yesterday. Noticing one of doors of a truck open,’ he walked along the platform of the engine to close it. In attempting to do so, he came into collision with a telegraph pole alongside the line, and was knocked off the train. When picked up ha was found to be severely bruised, and was removed to town for medical assistance.

ScholarshipsOamaru, August 1. The Hon E. Campbell has given £SO and Mr George Jones £2O, for bursaries In connection with the Waitaki High School. With £3O given by Mr Shrimski, £IOO has now been obtained for scholarships.
