THE RYAN CASE.

The Resident Magistrate, Mr J. Beswick, is at present engaged as a commissioner of the Victorian Courts, in taking evidence in the now historical case of Patrick Ryan’s bankruptcy. The hearing is conducted with closed doors, but the circumstances of the case are as follows :—A certain amount of money lay in the hands of the London Chartered Bank in Melbourne to the credit of one Mary Ford, and this the creditors of Eyan, both in Adelaide and New Zealand desired to obtain, the depositor, Mary Ford being identical with the wife of the bankrupt. The Bank however refused to pay over the money to either applicant, but in order to direst themselves of responsibility paid it into Court leaving Mrs Eyan, alias Mary Ford, the Adelaide creditors and the New Zealand creditors to fight the matter out, which they are now busily engaged in doing to the profit of the “gentlemen in the long robe.” Mrs Eyan is in Melbourne prosecuting her claim, the Timaru creditors’ trustees have taken action, and the Adelaide creditors are also moving. The disclosures that are being made are, on dlt, very remarkable and a peculiar feature of the affair is that very strong efforts have been made on behalf of Mrs Eyan to establish her claim by proving her to be Mary Ford, very peculiar affidavits having been filed in support of that contention. Tho matter will doubtless soon be public, and it appears that by far the most interesting chapters of the Ryan story are yet to bd published. i
