AN ALPINE ADVENTURER.

Mr G. B. Stewart returned here last night after making his third attempt to ascend Mount Cook. He succeeded in reaching an altitude of 10,700 feet, 1700 feet higher than at his last attempt. He has no hope of reaching the top except by means of a tethered balloon or discharging a rocket. He will, however, make another attempt if he can organise a party. Donald Martin rendered Mr Stewart considerable assistance. The latter left for Christchurch by the express this afternoon. He intends proceeding to the North Island and making a tour through the King Country. Mr Stewart has already made a tour through every part of the South Island, and has collected a mass of valuable information for the historical work he intends to write on his return to the Old Country.
