THIS DAY. [Received Dec. 11, 1883,12.30 p.m.] Lord Rosebery on the Colonials. Sydney, Dec. 11. Lord Rosebery was present last night at the dinner given by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and in reply* ing to the toast of his health, spoke highly of the importance which mast be attached to the Intercolonial Conference, as marking a distinctive epoch in the history of the Australasian Colonies. In its resolutions regarding the convict question the Convention, Lord Rosebery remarked, spoke with a power which could not he claimed by the colonies individually. The Convention spoke to the whole world as the mouthpiece of a united nation, and with a determination to take part in future events, and determined to control the present as regards its individual self.
