The“ Times” this morning states that the long neglected districts of Whatawhata and Baglan, are at last to be connected by telephone. The Minister of Justice* The Hon. Mr Conolly leaves for Picton this afternoon to spend the Christmas holidays at borne. He returns early in the new year. The Unemployed* Christchurch, Dec. 6. A meeting of men recently discharged from the temporary employment provided by Government was held this morning. Over 100 were present. A deputation subsequently waited on the Mayor requesting him to communicate with Government with a view of getting employment for them, calling attention at the same time to the fact that work bad again been found for the unemployed in Otago at 6s per day. The Mayor promised to do all he could for the men. Education Board Deficiencies* Hokitika, Dec. 6. At a monster meeting in the Town Hall last evening resolutions strongly condemnatory of the Greymouth Education Board for refusing to proceed with the elections under the Westland Subdivision Bill were passed. It was resolved to ask Government to at once have a special auditor appointed to examine the accounts for the last 3 years. The liabilities of the Board are now stated at £6OOO, whereas on the 31st December last these were stated to be £llOO only. The subdivision Act referred to, subdivides the Westland Board district into two districts, viz., Westland and Greymouth and divides the liabilities. County Chairman* Mr W. Durgan has been elected County Chairman. Bihle-reading in Schools. Dunedin, Dec. 6. At the Dunedin Presbytery meeting Mr Copeland gave notice of an overture to the Synod asking the latter to take steps to bring about an amendment of the Education Act, so that the daily reading of the Bible during school hours may be accomplished. Shocking Accident* OeorgeTownsend, driver of the Castle Street tram car, by some unaccountable means fell over the splashboard and held on to the reins. The horses slewed round, and the hind wheel of the car passed over his body. He died two hours afterwards at the Hospital,
