(Special to the Melbouene “ Age.”) London, Nov. 20, It is reported that the measure which recently passed the French Chamber of Deputies for the deportation of criminals to the Islands of the Pacific, will probably be abandoned. After a prolonged debate in Committee of the Senate, a clause was adopted giving Judges discretionary powi r (o banish criminals. Earl Derby has decided to refuse the application of certain Gorman owners of property in Fiji, who had appealed for compensation for alleged loss of their land. The Agents-General of the several Australasian colonies have had another interview with Earl Derby in reference to the annexation question. It is generally considered that his Lordship’s attitude was less firm than it was during the previous interview, and that he is beginning to display considerable vacil lution on the question. The statement that a secret treaty has been discovered between China and the Black Flags is said to be without foundatiou.
Jules Ferry, the French Premier, has decided to despatch M. Courmeaux on a special mission to tlio Australian colonies and New Caledonia.
