A mysterious robbery is reported from Makaraon Saturday. William M’Kelvie, a settler there, had 517 sovs, the savings of years, deposited in a wooden box under the bed in a lower room. Between 4.30 and 6 o’clock on Thursday evermg while the family were absent looking after the cows, the house was entered and the money abstracted, The police think they possess a clue to the robbery. There is an enterprising mendicant in Waimate. A strong, healthy-looking young man named James MoNeill, charged before the Bench there on Saturday with begging, pleaded that he had suffered severely from rheumatism. The police stated the accused was a confirmed nuisance, and had contrived to avoid detection by frequent change of costume, His begging suit was a ragged one, but when not professionally engaged he was in the habit of dressing well. The Bench sent the young man to gaol for 14 days. The Hon. Mr Bryce had an interview with Wahanui Bewi, Taonui, and other leading Ngatimaniopoto chiefs on Saturday at Bewi’s house at Kibikihi, and urged them to have their titles investigated in the Native Lands Court. They expressed their willingness generally, but when asked to sign applications for a hearing,they asked farther time to consider. It is believed these negotiations will result in the final opening of the King Country to settlement. Mr Bryce told the Kingites that to facilitate the investigation of the title of any block of land they may bring before the Native Lands Court, he will undertake to send two Judges to the Waikato district to remain two years, if necessary, and move about from plaoe to place.
