THE ANGLICAN SYNOD.

[By Telegraph.J

Napier, April 11.

The Synod this afternoon passed a resolution expressive of satisfaction at the erection of the Selwyn College at Cambridge, as a memorial of Bishop Selwyn, and at the appointment of the Rev. W. Lyttelton as Head Master of the College. It is not part of the University, and is specially intended for the training of students in the principles and doctrines of the Church of England. The Bishop of Melanesia (who is a son of Bishop Selwyn) expressed a hope that some wealthy colonists would found a scholarship at the College, open either to all youths of the colony or to the sons of the New Zealand clergy. The Synod then went into Committee on the Incorporation Bill, introduced in the House of Representatives by Mr Darguville. After a lengthy debate, the only alteration made was an addition to clause 3, requiring trustees before applying for incorporation to obtain the consent of the body they represent. Progress was then reported. The Synod spent the whole evening sitting in Committee on Archdeacon Stock’s Bill for defining “ communicant- ’ in the Statutes relating to the nomination and election of parochial officers, as one who had subscribed in the Churchwarden’s books and declared himself a communicant of the Church of England, or who, when challenged, subscribed to such declaration. The result of the debate was that numerous amendments were' negatived, and the head and tail cut off the chief, clause in the Bill. The Synod then adjourned at 11.15 p.m. ■.
