Henry Longford, residing on Cargill road, attempted to commit suicide last night, by shooting himself with a revolver. At 9 o’clock he bade good night to his wife and family, and immediately afterwards the report of a pistol was heard. The bullet entered the left breast, narrowly missing the heart and lodging in the left lung. The muzzle was placed close to the breast. The family assert that it was discharged accidentally, but medical men ridicule the idea. No hopes of recovery are entertained. FiresA fire occurred last night in a fiveroomed house in Leith street, occupied by E. E. Bradshaw. The premises were completely gutted. Bradshaw is insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe office for £250. The next house, occupied by F. Gumming, whose furniture is greatly damaged, is insured for £2OO in the South British. The properties are owned by Mr O. S. Eeeves. and were insured in the National office for £250. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a defective chimney, or a handkerchief left to dry in the kitchen igniting. A fire occurred at the police buildings at the main police station through spontaneous combustion. It was discovered before much damage was done.
