VISIT OF THE COLONIAL TREASURER.

The Hon Major Atkinson, Colonial Treasurer, arrived in Timaru last night by the ordinary train, accompanied by Mrs Atkinson and other members of bis family, and bis private secretary Mr Blundell. A number of persons awaited the bon gentleman’s arrival; and Messrs R. Turnbull and J". H. Sutter, M.H.R.’s for Timaru and Gladstone, respectively, with Mr C. E. Cooper, Collector of Customs received him on the platform After an exchange of greetings, the party was driven to the Queen’s Hotel, where apartments had been prepared for them. The hon. gentleman stated that he was not disposed to attend to public business that night, but would inspect the town and harbor in the morning, after which he intended going south by the express. He, however, purposes returning here a fortnight hence, when he will take the opportunity of giving an address. Very shortly after breakfast this morning the Major, accompanied by his son, drove round the town, visiting the Hospital and other objects of interest. He received no deputations, bis visit being part of a tour to the Lakes. Ho left by the express for the South to-day, and will attend to public business on his return.
