THEATRE ROYAL.

The fame of “ The Guv’nor ” drew an it amense bouse last night to witness its H( scond representation in Timaru. The Theatre was crammed in every part. T lie cast was precisely the same as on S aturday evening, and our former r< jtnarks concerning the piece apply e qually to it on this occasion. We o baervo that “ The McToddy ” has, as v re suggested, added a tartan to his other “ Hielund ” toggery. The piece w eat well and everybody seamed to th noroughly enjoy it. Wo confess that it*, strikes us as by no moans the moat

entertaining play in the repertoire of this capital Company, nor the one in which Mr Hall appears to the best advantage. In watching it one seems to be always on thorns, for fear somebody should flag or droop, or not come quite tip to the requisite emotional mark. On that account we should fancy it is somewhat difficult to play, and likely to grow more arduous at each repetition. To-night the people of Timaru will have a last opportunity (this season at least) of witnessing a performance by Mr Hall’s Company, and we can assure those who have not yet seen “Our Girls.” that there is a rare treat before them. It is a piece infinitely superior to “ The Guv’nor” nnd Mr Hall’s Gingah is a perfectly unique performance. Those who have learned to appreciate Mr Hall (and what theatre goer has not ?) will need no indneemet other than his name, to attend to-night; and we feel sure there will be in the audience many a one, who, in the early days of colonial history, has enjoyed the veteran’s impersonations. Clever he was always, versatile, energetic, full of “ go.” He has lost none of those, his twinkling eyes are brighter than ever, and he has, by long practice, obtained such consummate mastery of his art as to place him in tho very foremost rank of comedians. We trust tho farewell that he and bis excellent company will bid us to-night will not be a final adieu, but that at no distant date they may again claim welcome at our hands.
