BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Tiinaru Borough Council was held last evening. Present Crs, Jackson ,(in the chair), Gibson, Cullmann, Gabites, Filraer, Shorratt, Bush, and Ross. ; ; THE LATE WRECKS. ' Letters from various municipalities were read, expressing sympathy with the townspeople and .the bereaved. Mr jD._ McGuinness ■ again s applied for permission to erect, a drinking fountain and horse trough, and enclosed a cheque for £2 10s in; payment of water rate for same. v . Granted', subject to inspection by the Foreman of Works. BUILDING REGULATIONS. Messrs King and Co., contractors for extension to Bank of How Zealand, asked leave to proceed. The building surveyor reported favorably and the application was granted.' IMTEOVipiENT OF STREETS. Residents of Cains’ Terrace and Brown street drew attention to the filthy condition of their streets, and asked the Council to improve them, Referred to tho Works Committee. carried on. The road was more dangerous than before. The Council left this with the Works Committee with power to act. The Foreman of Works asked for a further supply of broken metal, also for pitchers to place round fire plugs. The Council authorised these to be obtained. Mr McGill’s tender for sinks and traps was accepted. " VISE BILL. The Town Clerk read the Bill just introduced by Mr Levestam. Mr Bush questioned whether it was intended that the Council should hare the power to levy a rate for the maintenance, of the Brigade, or that they should be compelled to do so. Cr Gibson thought the Road Boards should help this work and also that Borough, Councils should not be permitted to levy rates at will. It was finally resolved- I *-" That in the opinion of this Council Clause 4 of the proposed Fire Brigades Bill is objec tionable, and that the power given to the Borough Councils to levy rate under Clause 108 of the “ Municipal Corpora tions Act, 1876,” should not be increased, and they are thoroughly of opinion that no special or separate rate should be levied except by the consent of the ratepayers.” * wateeworks. Mr Spooner, Reservoir keeper, at tended to state that there was a break in the flow of water into the Reservoir. There was at the present tiine 15 feet in the Reservoir. Filmer then moved —“ That the Works Committee be requested to report by next meeting of the Council on the best and most economical method of connecting the Reservoir with the present pipehead, with the estimated cost of same, and that they be empowered to obtain all necessary information (professional or other) they may think necessary.” The motion, seconded by Cr. Ross, was carried unanimously.
