Thomas Jefferson once said : “ All error may be safely tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. ” That is the fundamental principle of secular government. Egypt now extends to the great lakes of Central Africa, and she has thus become, in point of territorial extension, one of the largest countries in the world. Whoever says to me, “ Think as I do, or God will damn you,” will soon say “ Think as I do, or I will kill you.” Let us beseech God to soften these savage hearts, and inspirein all His children sentiments of brotherhood.—Exchange. Reducing the Cost of Washing.— The expense of cleaning the lineD of a family is an item which in the course of a year assumes considerable proportions, and in many cases bears heavily upon the income of paterfamilias. Hence any new process which will reduce the cost and produce as good results as the old way, is heartily welcomed by housekeepers. From France, that home of the true blanchisseus, comes the good news that the expense of washing may be reduced to an average like this : —One cent, for a pair of drawers, half cent, for each shirt, and so on. This is the process : 2 lbs of soap is reduced with a little water to a sort of pap, which, having been slightly Warmed, is cooled in ten gallons of water,_ to Which is added one spoonful of turpentine oil, and two spoonfuls of ammonia ; then the mixture is agitated.. The water is kept at a temperature which may be borne by the hands. In this solution are introduced the white clothes, and they are left there two hours before washing them in soap. American Exchange. Astronomical. —ln a recent lecture, delivered in Edinburgh, on “ The Stars,” Professor Grant gave a graphic idea of the immensity of space. He said a railway train, travelling night and day at the rate of 50 miles an hour, would reach the moon in six months, the sun in 200 years, and Alpha Oentauri, the nearest of the fixed stars, in 42,000,000 of years. A ball from a gun, travelling at the rate of 900 miles an hour, would reach Alpha Centauri in 2,700,000 years, while light, travelling, as it did, at the rate of 185,000 miles in a second, would not reach it in less than three years. Light from some of the telescopic stars would take ■5760 years to reach the earth, and from some of these clusters the distance is so great that light would take half a million of years to pass to the earth, so that we now saw objects not as they really are, but as they were half a million of .years ago. These stars roight have become extinct thousands of years ago, and yet their light might present itself to us. As to the magnitude of the stars, he noticed that it was computed* that Alpha Lyra was one hundred billions of miles distant from the earth, and its magnitude and splendour were as 20 to 1 when compared with our sun. Similar investigations brought out the fact that our sun neither vastly greater nor vastly less than the great majority of the stars.
