WARKWORTH ATHLETIC SPORTS CLUB.

ANNUAL GATHERING A SUCCESS.

Despite the threatening weather, over 500 people were prosent at the annual sports. The night previous and early morning of Saturday much rain fell, made the track rather sticky for th» cyclists, but after noon the sun dried up \he track considerably. The ' gate' did not come up to expectations, the receipts falling short by about £20 from last year. The secretary will be pleased to receive any belated donations to help out this loss. ■ The events were got off well to time, and the competition of running events for the Smith Trust Fund Silver Cup, open to school boys of Rodney brought forth keen rivalry, Warkworth School eventually winning, with X aipara Flats second. (The winning school holds the cup until the next annual sports, when it will be competed for again, the winners of the different events in the meantime being presented with medals.)

The cycling and running events created much interest, the competitors lining up in fair numbers. The chopping competitions also brought forth the usual nominations, and some fine work wa» shown by some of the competitors. ;

The committee and secretary (Mr W. F. Ross), had arrangements planned to a nicety, and everything therefore went off without a hitch. They are to be congratulated on the success of the meeting, and which would probably have proved a bigger record but for the uncertainty of weather conditions.
