HOSPITAL SHIP.

A concert and gift auction were held in the Leigh hall on Friday, June 11, iii aid of the Hospital Ship fund. The idea «riginated with Mrs 0. E. Gravatt to whom great credit is due. This lady worked hard, assisted by many trilling helpers, to brine this function to a successful issue. The attendance was good, but unfortunately it was a wet night, which .kept away many who intended to come. ; r The concert was presided over by Mr Jas. Greenwood, the principal performers being Mesdames Gravatt and Ashworth, Messrs C. Ashton, J. J. Woods and Master Darroch. Several who had promised to assist were prevented from coming on account of the weather. Mr E. Oarran very kindly auctioned the many and varied goods generously donated, and by his genial manner put everyone in good humor. The bidding was spirited. Many . things when knocked down were put up over and over again, so that trifling articles fetched fabulous prices. Among the things sent in were a pig, a lamb, a sheep dog, fowls, ' sacks of chaff, vegetables, cases of fruit, butter and eggs, roasted fowls, cakes, clothing; fancy work, etc. A shooting gallery, kindly lent by Mr Hazzard, was well patronised, and juvenile sellers of lollies and buttonholes also did good business. Supper and a dance brought a very pleasant evening to a close. The total amount made, including donations received, amounted to over £50. Thanks are due to all who contributed to make this Much a social and financial success. METALLING, Messrs Dunning and Wyatt, contractors for breaking and delivering metal, have had to close the quarries for the winter on account of the wet weather, as they were unable to cart the metal without seriously injuring the roads.
