MaRTON (9) v HUNTERVILLE (5) The first match in the second round of the Junior Competition was played on Marton Park yesterday between the above teams, and was one of the best Junior games seen here for some years. Although the Hunterville forwards had a big advantage in weight the Martou pack were superior in both loose and tight play. From the kick off play centred in midfield for a few minutes, when the Hunterville forwards broke through and carried play into Marton’s 25’s. From a line out Carroll secured and dashed across near the corner, Illston converting. On resumption of play McDonald, who hurt his ankle, was replaced by Kumeroa. Play on to half time was even, there being frequent good forward rushes by both sides and good line kicking bv the backs, but there was no further score. In the second spell Marton rushed play into Hunterville’s 25’s, but Hunterville saved with good line kick. From the line out F Ellis took the ball through at his toe and scored a beautiful try, Doreen failing to convert ' From the kick off Marton again took up the offensive, and soon had Hunterville hard pressed. From a scrum near Hnaterville’s line Kumeroa secured and cutting round the blind side scored a good try, Doreen failing to convert. With the scores 6t05 in Marton’s favour the game became very fast, first one side breaking away and then the other. Near the e<nd of the game Rivers broke away and carried play into Hanterville’s 35’s, where Kameroa secured and scored his second try amidst great excitement. (Jarroll, McMiun and Shindler were the pick of the Hunterville forwards, Carroll playing a great game in the lino outs. In the backs Reed, McAuloy and Illston were the pick. For Marton F. Ellis played a brilliant forward game, and* was well supported by Rivers and Kumeroa, while Sutcliffe, Doreen and Eaglesome stood out in the backs. BULLS (12) v RATA (0). The above Juniors met on the polo ground at Bulls yesterday and after a very good display of the game Bulls proved the victors by 13 points to nil. The game was fast and exciting throughout. Bulls showed great form, particularly in the forwards, who held their own all through. The backs were also much better, but missed many good chances through over anxiousness, Bata backs were good but did not get many opportunities to show their skill. Their half and wing threequarter were always prominent, and the full back plaved a very safe game. Soon after the start McKelvie marked and Gifford placed a nice goal. Not long afterwards Bata where given the sam-> opportunity right in front of Bull’s posts, but just missed. From the loose, Goebel, who was playing a brilliant game, secured and dashed over. The kick failed and the first spell ended Bulls 6, Rata nil. The second spell opened up briskly and after up and down play Howard led a forward rush and registered a try, Broughton failed with the kick. Rata at cnce rushed play to Bulls’ 25 and looked dangerous for a while, but the local team drove them back to their own territory where the forwards again pushed, through and Patterson scored, Gifford missed the kick. No further scores were made and the game ended Bulls 12 Rata 0 Mr T Richardson ably controlled the game.
