OHAKEA SPORTS.

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL SPORTS. Yesterday’s • gathering on Mr Frank Bailey’s grounds was the largest which has yet' enjoyed the big bill of interesting events put on by the Ohakea Sports Club. The day was gloriously fine and the shelter of the belts of trees on the grounds was much appreciated. The greater portion of the programme was devoted to horse events, which were well contested by qnite a number of the most prominent horsemen in the district. Mr Jas Bull was to have judged these events but could not do so owing to illness. Mr Jas Oootnbe officiated and he had a very difficult task. The-pony classes were particularly good and the horsemanship in t,he big events could not be excelled. The sports were the most successful the Society have yet held, and pleased spectators and competitors promised support which will make nest year’s meeting even more successful. The committee is a very live one, and there were no complaints concerning the judging or management. The secretarial ar-i rangements were in the b ands of Messrs J P Richardson and O J MeDdnell, ably assisted by Mr F Outts. Their businesslike methods and unfailing courtesy helped considerably towards the day’s success, much of which was the result of the energy and tact displayed by the conductor of the sports, Mr Alt’. Sanson, and his assistant, Mr B J Precklington. The youngsters were well catered for —quite a number of events were added to the programme, and it is the intention of the cammittee to have more events for junior athletes at next meeting. Nor will the older athletes be forgotten. The old favourite, Twilight, was in great form and his performance was equal to any he has yet put up, and his owner, Mr J Bryce, holds the beautiful Cup, presented By Mrs D Riddiford, for one yea r. The open driving competition in which drivers drove their own horse, was won ‘ by Mr J Freoklington, who secures the trophy presented by Mr T P Notau. Mr “Ken” Bailey had a popular win in the Open Pony Jump, and he Jiolds for one year the Cup presented by President J A Bailey. During the afternoon Marton Municipal Brass Band discoursed a programme of music which was appreciated, and the numerous picnic parties from a very wide area made full use of the Society’s supply of hot water. Lady supporters of the Club used their persuasive powers to great effect in getting for the weight of the sheep, and as a result £7 15s was added to the funds. At the conclusion of the days’ sport, Mr Jas McKelvie presented successful competitors with the trophies they had won, and they wera heartily cheered, as were also the dmiors of the prizes an d the sports officials. Post entries are evidently popular with competitors, who appreciated the fine show case in which were displayed the various trophies.
