HAWKE’S BAY WINS THE SAYILE CUP. Per Press Association. Hastings, March 17 The final game in the Savile Polo Cup was played at Hastings to-day. The weather remained hot and dusty. The Hawke’s Bay A and Paroora (Canterbury) met in the final. The game was very fast and open, and resulted: —Hawke's Bay 9, Pareora 1, the former thus taking the Cup. The score was not altogether an indication of the play, which was far from one-sided, though Hawke’s Bay had the advantage throughout. P. Elworthyf for Pareora, was a scorer with a beautiful hit. Hawke’s Bay scorers— Lyons 3, W McKenzie 2, F McKenzie 3, O Nelson 1. The Pareora players complain bitterly about the treatment of their ponies in the latter part of the journey from Timaru to Hastings. The ponies left Timaru on Tuesday noon last week, had a night in stables at Christchurch, boated at Lyttelton the following day, transhipped hurriedly, at Wellington to train, and it is alleged that the stationmaster at Palmerston refused to allow the horses to be removed from the truck op Thursday night. The players claim that this was cruelty to animals, as they were improperly fed and in consequence of the long trip the ponies are leg weary and incapable of proper work. This morning’s handicap game resulted Poverty Bay B (receive 13) scored 17 goals v. Hawke’s Bay C (receive 29) scored 2 goals. The result therefore was Poverty Bay 29 v. Hawke’s Bay 31. The handicap matches continue to-morrow.
