STILL BETTER PRICES. Prices at the hides sale held in Wellington on Friday afternoon showed a substantial increase noon the sensational realisations of the sale held there a fortnight ago. Competition was keen for ail sound lots, and buyers, including several Australian shippers and tanners, were well represented. Tanners availed themselves of their option, mainly on lines of medium and medium to heavy ox. Following is the range of prices:—Ox, sound,' 701 b and over 23%d to 26%d ox sound, 59 to 691 b, 24_%d to 26d, ox sound, 53 to 381 b to 25%d, ox sound, 45 to 521 b, 20d to 24%d, ox sound, 33 to 441 b, 19%d to 24>£d, ox cut and slippy, all grades, 15d to 24%d, cow sound, 451 b and over, 22%d to ?4%d, cow cut and slippy, all grades, 9d to 23>£d, yearling and kip sound, 111 b to 161 b, to 32%d, Yearling and kip cut and slippy, all grades, 12 to calf sound, first quality, under 61b, 45d to 50>£d, calf sound, 6 to 81b, 45d to 50d, calf sound, 9 to 101 b, 36d to 45d, calf cut and slippy 9d to 43d, bull, stag 12d to 18%d, horse 14s to 30s 6d.

The brokers report as follows: Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., Wellington, report:—At our second hide sale under the new regulations held on Friday prices showed a further advance. Oompetitibn was exceptionally keen from a full bench of buyers, including representatives of Australian exporters. Tanners did not select as big a proportion as at onr last sale. Sound ox and cow hides were up 2d to 3d per lb. on our last sale pries, and kips and calfskins the same. We topped the market again for calfskins, with a nice” line at 55J£d per lb, and another lot brought 50d, whilst two extra heavy sound unwashed ox hides realised 25%d per lb, an average of £8 9s 6d each. We quote the range of prices as follows :

Hides—Ox sound heavy to 26%d, medium 20d to 25%d, light 19%d to 24%d, cut and slippy 15d to 24-f|d. Cow sound heavy 23%d to 24%d, medium 17%d to 24%d., cut and slippy 8d to 28%d, yearling and kip 28%d to 35%d, yearling and kip cut and slippy 12d to 31 %d, calf sound 86d to 50%d, cut and slippy 9d to 48%d, bull stag 12d to IB%d. Horse 14s to 80s 6d. Tallow: In casks 57s to 81s 6d, in tins 48s to 74a. Sundries: Horse hair 20%d to 28d. Tails Is 6d to Is 7%d. Messrs Levin and Go, Ltd—Out of a total offering of 8550 bides and calfskins, our catalogue comprised an excellent selection of 1280, most of which were superior conditioned hides. A fine of thirteen superior conditioned ox hides of an average weight of 70bls ( each made 26%d per lb, and several lots of calf fetched 50d per lb Loan .and Mercantile Agency Co, Ltd —Competition was very keen for all sound lots, heavy hides selling at about 2d, and calf about 3%d above last sales. Damaged and inferior lots were somewhat neglected. Local tanners did not operate extern sivly, the bulk of the offering being taken for shipment. We obtained 50%d for a lino of 66 alb calfskins, top price of the sale. Murray, Roberts and Co, Ltd, — Our catalogue totalled 400 hides and calfskins, supplies being rather smaller than usual. The bulk of the catalogue was bought for export. Prices for hides were approximately l%d to 2%d higher than at last sale, and about on a level for calfskins and yearlings, Dalgety and Co, Ltd,—-All lots were keenly competed for, heavy ox hides advancing 2d to 3d perib, also medium weight ox and cows Id to 2d, and kips also showed a slight advance. For calfskins as high as 50%d was obtained, being an advance of 2%d on the highest price paid last sale. N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op Distrionting Co—There was again an excited market. In the case of super ok hide, for a line weighing 63%1b average we realised a very high price of 26d per lb, which constitutes a record for this class of hides for these sales. In the case of yearlings we reached a record price of 35%d. Calf was again in good demand, whereas onr best line at the sale held a fortnight ago realised 47%d, we disposed yesterday of a line at 50d per lb Prior to the hides sale, several lota of tallow were sold, there being a good demand [at late ratfes with a hardening tendency. Lots in casks went from 57a to 81s 6d per cwt, and in tins from 48a to 74s per owt. Levin and Go, placed a line of beat beef tallow at 93s 6d per cwt.
