They crossed a long stretch of lava formation extending about 100 miles, and flew for six hours without seeing a habitation or signs of living .beings. The carburetter flooded necessitating a forced landing in the desert. After strenuous work it was repaired, but later they were forced again to land in. the-desert. They were extremely hazy as to their location. Having landed in a largo stretch of water they stayed the night and early next morning they were '.’disturbed by Arabs, who told them they had landed on the shores of Lake Habhanijah. not far from Bagdad. Their main anxiety was whether the petrol would hold out. They transferred a few pints to the gravity tank and rose again. The clouds were low and it was raining. The Euph rates was sighted and as soon as Bagdad was visible they found the aerodrome without difficulty. At the moment of landing they had 1% pints of petrol, not sufficient- to circle over the aerodrome. The actual flying time crossing the desert was eight hours and ten minutes.
