HALCOMBE NOTES.

' Prom Our Own Correspondent, After residing in our midst for over twenty years, Mr James Flemming has left Halcombe, and by bis departure the district has lost one who was intimately known to most people, many of whom will remember him and value his memory still more for many kind and thougblffll acts which nave helped to lighten the load of the sorrowful and suffering, and for many seasonable words of counsel and commonsease advice which he has spoken when the kind words of a friend were of golden worth. Mr Flemming came to,New Zealand from the North of Ireland in 1890, and for the first period of his residence in the Dominion Jia was occupied farming in the North Auckland district. Coming to Halcombe over twenty years ago he took over the store now known as the People’s Arcade, and remained there until quite recently, when he sold out to Mr W. J. Francis. It was Mr Flemming’s intention, on selling the store, to take np a small farm and live happy ever after, but the call of trade proved too strong, and so he has purchased another business in Carterton. Though not taking a very active part in the social affairs of our village, he always “cam* to light” when a subscription was needed, and as the chief end of man is to pay, he filled the bill as a very worthy citizen. He was at one time a member of the old Town B,oard and bad been a member of the local School Committee.

Oh Sunday afternoon last Mr and Mrs F. B Farmer’s residence on Mingaroa Road presented a bright and animated appearance, when a large number of friends availed themselves of an invitation to hear the Haolombe Band give a concert on the lawn. Mr and Mrs Farmer have the happy knack of making people feel at home, are kind and hospitable to a degree, and needless to say everyone had a good time. After tea the Bandmaster thanked Mr and Mrs Farme* 1 . The bandsmen were very grateful for the kindness shown them, and much appreciated the material assistance Mr Farmer had given the Band. The health of the host and hostess was tfien drunk,, and Mr Farmer replied, saying how much he and Mrs Farmer liked to do anything they could to brighten things up socially. He hoped that would not be the last time they would be there and have a good time. He and his wife were very pleased to see th - bandsmen and their friends, and he thanked everyone for their kindness.
