SHOOTING.

TRENTHAM MEETING. Per Press Association. Trontham, March 8 The morning was dull with a strong tricky wind from the right rear. A start was made with the last lap to qualify for inclusion in the King’s Fifty to fire off on Wed nesday, when the men went down for the Otago Match, ten shots at 800 and 1000 yards, half using the former distance on the Somerville range and half the 1000 yards Qi the Seddon range. Heavy shifting clouds caused difficulties in finding the elevation, especially at the longer distance, with the result that scoring began very patchily. Of the first lot down only one, Halliday, got all his shots on the target, and they only totalled 30 out of 50. Yeliowlees got 30 with a miss, for his last shot. Among the early shoots at 800 yards Page and O. Milroy were the best with 48. As the morning progressed the sun came out fitfully for awhile, and then settled down steadily to its shining task. The wind, however, remained intractable and scoring continued uneven in "t character. The only steady feature about the business was the inflow of half-crowns for challenges which were profitless to the competitors. The Otago Match was completed by luncheon. The wind and light kept up Trentham’s reputation for fickleness, as a result of which many promising aggregates had to be dashed out as probabilities 'for the final test. - The match appears to be won by Kay, of Taradale, with 86, made np of 447 at 800, and 39 at 1000 yards—very creditable performances in the circumstances. Oroxton, of Karori, comes nest with 88. Up to this stage the reshuffle of the aggregate leaders has put Oroxton in the lead with 446, seven points ahead of Feast, of Opaki. Barkle and H Loveday are next with 435 each, followed by another pair, Karris and Bolton. This afternoon the Hawke’s Bay Match, tan shots at 900 yards, and the Taranaki Match, ten shots at 1000 yards, will keep the men folly busy trying to beat the elements. The latter have always the advantage and by the evening the leadership may easily be in fresh hands.
