TAIHAPE NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent. A street brawl on Saturday ended in two of the parties to the trouble being each fined £5, with 7s 9d costs, A third party was admitted to the hospital and treated for a broken ankle, and another had to receive medical treatment tor a wound in the head.

The secretary of Wanganui Pipe Band has, in a letter to the Taihape Caledonian Association, expressed the appreciation of the members of the Band of the hospitality extended to them during their resent visit to Taihape, and intimated that the president of the Assoeiation (Mr W. McLennan) had been elected a life member of the band.

At the annual meeting of Taihape Tradesmen’s Association,, th / following officers for ensuring year were elected :—President, Mr W H Fookes; secretary, Mr E Loader; treasurer, Mr W Howeus; committee, Messrs H Dashwood, J Gifford, W J McCormick, H D Bond, and F Read. A motion of which notice had been given, to merge ine Association with the Chamber of Commerce, was defeated after some discussion,.

The High School Committee met on Monday. A letter was received from Wanganui Education Board, stating that the committee had failed to undertake to raise £35 towards the cost of erecting shelter sheds in the school grounds, and as Mr A J Joblin, the district representative on the Board, had undertaken to raise £25, the work would he proceeded with. The committee passed the following resolution: “That this committee notify the Board that It cannot retreat from the position it has taken up with regard ifco its refusal to raise funds tor repairs or renewals; and regrets that the Board has not grasped the fac t that the committee is rightly opposed to the practice of canvassing the public for funds for necessary repairs or renewals, which should be undertaken by the Board.” The committee also endorsed the chairman’s action in replying publicly to the strictures passed on the committee by Mr Joblin in a letter to the Board and to the press. A railway engine-driver named J Lawson had one hand severely lacerated at Kaugacaua on Monday through being caught in the tablet exchange gear. The injured man had to be relieved by another driver from Ohakune, and was subsqeuently treated at Taihape, Mr H Mercer, statioumaster, was made the recipient of a presentation by the combined railway staffs on Wednesday. Mr Mercer is being transferred to Rotorua, and was presented with a gold- mounted fountain pen for himself am* a silver cake dish for Mrs Mercer.
