MANGAWEKA NOTES.

From ,Our Own Correspondent) “But pleasures are like poppies spread, You seize the fiow’r; its bloom la shed I Or like the snowflake on the river One moment white—then gone forever.”

Nevertheless, w’e “seize the flower and delight in the moment white,” and the opportunities to do so are numerous. Last week Taihape had a show, Caledonian Sports, followed by a Grand Scotch concert in the evening, and a circus all iu rapid succession, A fair number went up to each function, and, I understand, some saw it through. Yesterday we had Ohingaiti Sports and Show, a lovely day, fine attendance of happy people, and good concert in the evening. Mangaweka was well represented all through. Next week we have Rangiwahia Show and we are promised an entertainment by a touring musical family. On Tuesday evening a meeting of the R.S.A. was held In the Library. The question of landless men was discussed and a list of names of those waiting for land made out so that headquarters could be immediately advised of the position. It was decided to hold a series of social functions during the winter and a strong committee was formed to further the project and instructed to confer with the Croquet Club with a view to mutual arrangements being imade between the Club and the R.S.A. Anzac Day was mentioned and a committee elected to arrange a memorial service on 35th April, and some suitable commemorative function on a dav earlier or later.

A great deal cf anxiety has been aroused as to the whereabouts of Mr Michael Kenny, a single, elderly man, employed by Kiwitea County Council on the Upper Kawhatan roads. Kenny lived in a hut by himself and was last seen at his work on Friday, February 20th. Diligent enquiries have been made by telephone and otherwise without result. Mail matter and groceries placed in his box on the 20th were not removed by him to his whare and the County Engineer has had no communication from him, hence the anxiety. Constable Larmer is organising a largo search party to go out on Sunday morning. Owing to a breakdown at the power house we were without light for four nights During pumping opex-ations on Friday a dead short circuit to earth came on the transmission lines, causing an excessive overload, which, in conjunction with the - heavy motor loan, caused the insulation on two of the arma ture coils to break down and both were burned out The new generator which arrived some time ago from England was in readiness in case of emergency, and the work of installation was carried out Ly the engineer as quickly as possible. On Tuesday evening current from the new generator was switched on to the lines, everything running satisfactorily. To-night the light is good.
