Merchants are hard hi t by the banting restrictions and exchange chaos. From ever}' quarter there are threats of strikes for higher wages and better conditions. The Nationalists in the general election campaign are assiduously praaohidg Republicanism, while the Socialists and Bolsheviks are endeavouring to stir up unrest amon g the natives. The mining industry has a prosperous outlook with gold at its present level but is crippled by strikes. Cost of living demonstrations are taking place everywhere throughout the Union. Government is being strongly urged to act before the situation becomes desperate.
