Recently when being driven near Waingake (Gisborne) a motor lorry, through engine trouble, backed over a declivity and fell 800 feet, ending up in a total wreck. The driver was not on the machine when it fell over the cliff. Accused, who is a widower, with four children, was admitted to probation for 12 months on the first charge, fined £lO on tho second, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on the third. At Hamilton the driver of a motor car which collided with aud damaged a horse bus, was fined £2O and costs. He had driven at excessive speed on the wrong side of the road. Defendant said he was usgd to driving on the right side of the road in France, and found it difficult to reverse the rule of the road. The magistrate said defendant was lucky* to escape .being charged with an indictable offence.
