SHORTAGE OF SILVER.

Hatton Garden firms are buying and smelting great quantities of silverware, paying 40d per ounce over pre-war cost of the hall-marked, articles. Needy middle-classes are among the largest suppliers, and many are parting with the last •spoon, being content to re-stock when normal times return. Moneychangers have similarly sold 100,000 ounces of foreign silver coins, chiefly ■ French and Swiss, for smelting purposes. London, Oct. 28. The Chamber pf Commerce supports the immediate introduction of nickel, worth at the present time under twopence an ounce. A further record price for silver has been reached, viz., 65%d.
