“Is the Prime Minister aware,” asked Mr W. H. Field (Otaki) on Tuesday, “that tea is likely to increase in the near future to something like 4s a pound all round? Is there any “justification for such a-, rise; and will the Prime Minister urge the Board of Trade to takevigorously in hand the work of keeping down the increasing cost of. living?” Mr Massey stated that he had / heard that there was a serious shortage in the tea crop. He would ask the Board of Trade to inquire into the rumour. There may be nothing in the rumour, but it is certain that if State Control of the Liquor Traffic is carried something will need to bo heavily taxed to meet the £15,000,000* necessary to purchase the Trade, and tea, sugar and tobacco are likely commodities.
