SHEARERS' ACCOMMODATION

The Shearers’ Accommodation Bill provides for appointment of inspectors who are to have free right of ingress and egress to and from any shearing shed and any place which may be provided for accommodation of sh oarers. Accommodation for shearers is to be provided as follows; (a) separate sleeping quarters and dining quarters (b) sufficient supply of furniture and necessary utensils; sufficient provision for the supply of drinking water and Washing water, and for lighting, heating, ventilation" and sanitation (c) sleeping quarters containing at least 480 cubic feet of air space for each person to be accommodated; (d) Immediately prior to the employment of shearers in any season fumigation or disinfection of quarters by employer to satisfaction of inspector ;(e) Suitable provision for storage ®t meat and other perishables (f) Suitable provision for drying clothes; (9) Suitablejfirst aid appliances. Power is given to an inspector to modify the above requirements in the following circumstances, (a) In the case of any accommodation that is already provided before the coming into operation of the Bill; (b) in any case where he is satisfied that owing to the special circumstances it is or has been, impracticable to provide the accommodation. (c) In the case of any shearer whose ordinary residence is in the immediate neighbourhood of his place of employment or (d) In any case where such requirement is not necessary. Bight of appeal to a magistrate against the decision of an Inspector is given to employers, but this right is not to apply in cases inspector states that the requirements are needed urgently for tbs protection of the health of any shearer. Z Failure to comply with any of the requirements is to be punishable with a fine of £35, while employers are given remedies tor wilful damage by shearers.
