EDUCATION BOARD.

The Wanganui Education Board mat on Wednesday night. Present: Messrs Fred Pirani (chairman), Bryant. Hemmingway, Mclntyre, Pilkiuctou, Freeth, Mr P O Freeth referred to the Department’s prejudice against central halls in schools, and said everybody else appeared to be In favour of them.

Mr Fraser said they bad been told absolutely that the Department would not approve of nevr schools in which a central hall was featured Mr Freeth suggested that the matter should be taken up with the Minister.

The Chairman replied that the Minister’s contention was that it was a question of money. In England, all the schools had central halls. It was ridiculous to try to run a school with an attendance of over 300 wtheut a central hall. In connection with an application for a new school at Western Rangitikei, it was decided to shift the Mt Curl school and to apply to the Department for a grant to cover the cost.

Westmere: Committee’s request re ont-olfices referred to Mr Hodge for report. Hnnterville; £]for £ subsidy up to £35 offered. The following resignations were accepted: E A McNeill, third assistant, Victoria Avenue; F J Grant, second assistant, West End;U F Grant, third assistant, West End; F Duncan, assistant, Wangaehu; I* Seyb, acting special assistant, Hnnterville; V Livingstone aol® teacher, Whareroa; BI Howie, sole teacner Upper Retaruks; W NT Death, sole teacher, Marehema; D H Willoughby, sola teicher, Tauangatutu; G U Martin, pupil teacher Victoria Avenue. R K Gordon, pupil teacher, Aramoho. Gray Scholarship.—Ernest Sudden, Terrace End, G3B marks, is the win ner of the Lieut. Gray scholarship. The*proposal,to hold an educational, conference in June was agreed to. Mr T R Hodder was re-appointed one of the Board’s repreentatives on tbe Palmerston High Shool Board. The use of a number of country schools was granted to the Returnng Officer at Feilding for tha licensing poll. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £416, Coal, Creek —It was decided not to remove the school at present, subject lo Mr Johnston’s consent. Marotiri. —It was decided to apply to tbe Education Department for a vehicle to carry pupils to Moutoa. Crofton.— Permission was given to Messrs Pirani and Fraser to report to next meeting. They visited various sites and are waiting for a quotation from tbe Crofton Committee.
