WAR GRAVES COMMISSION.

(Aust- and N.Z. Cable Association.! London. February 19. Kudyard Kipling, on behalf of the War Graves’ Commission, Sof which Mr Fisher and Sir Thomas Mackenzie are members, traces tbe origin and development of tbe work, points out that the finances of the respective Governments will bear the costs in proportion to the number of graves. The Commission recommends the erecton of a cross of sacrifice and an altar-like stone of remembrance in each cemetery, with a plain enduring headstone for eacn grave, thirty inches by fifteen inches, bearing the carved symbol of tbe dead man’s faith, his name, rank, and regimental badge, also an inscription not exceeding sixty-five letters, supplied by relatives. Tbe military committee advise, regarding memorials to commemorate achievements, snob as the Canadians at Ypres, the South Afrcans at Delviile Wood, the Australians at Amiens, and the British at tbe breaking at the Hindenborg Line, that it ia hoped the best art of the Empire will give its services in designing them. At present there is insalficient labour in the world to cut and carve letter headstones. Meanwhile wooden crosses will be renewed if necessary, and cemeteries faithfully and reverently tended.
