THE DEFENDER INQUIRY.

NAUTICAL COURT’S DECISION.

Per Press Association. Wellington, August 10. The Nautical Court re the destruction of the steamer Defender found that the lire originated by the use of a naked light in the stoke hold while the cargo of benzine, affected by the leakage, was being stowed in the adjoining hold; also that the bulk head between the bold and stokehold was neither air or water tight The fire was primarily due to the negligent act of Fireman Dossett leaving a naked light on the floor of the stokehold, and wrongful default of the master and chief officer failing to take the necessary steps to prevent the use of a naked .light where benzine was being stowed. The danger was evidently unappreciated. The Court did not consider that the crew or any watersiders employed in loading contributed to the cause of the lire, the present outbreak indicated the necessity of all parties concerned in the carriage and handling of dangerous cargo taking every precaution possible to prevent such occurrences. The Court was of opinion that tba steamer’s hold was unsuitable for the carriage of benzine cargo, and recommends a stricter supervision by Harbour Boards over handling dangerous cargoes such as benzine and similar light oils, and that provision be made when framing bv-laws for the inspection and licensing of vessels used in the carriage of such dangerous goods with proper supervision of Harbour Board officials or persons in authority to ensure greater safety. No order was made as to costs.
