At the annual meeting of the Now Zeal aid Institute the President's address was devoted unduly- to emphasising the groat importance of scientific research, and urging greater encouragement by the Government. Tho Hector Memorial Award Committee unanimously recommended T. F. Clieeseman as a recipient for tho Hector Medal and prize for researches, in hot uy. • The New Zedihd Institute to-day elected Dr. Cockayne president. The Hon. G. W. Russell said lie was surprised to find th-'t the annual grant of £SOO had not been increased since 1868, and he would place before the Cabinet a proposal to increase tho grant substantially, on clearly defined lines. His own idea whs that Parliament should be asked each year to vote a special sum to bo used in following the equipment for the four University laboratories, and also for the Dominion laboratory. The time had come for Now Zealand to face seriously tbo problem of tho utilising of by-products, and creating secondary industries. Tho suggestion that Gorman and Austrian names should be removed from the imp of New Zealand was condemned to-day by the president .of the New Zealand Institute, Processor Benhara. Ho termed the proposal as ridiculous and highly undesirable. Books of travel would he made unintelligible. If any proposal of the kind was about the Institute should enter a strong protest.
