FAREWELL AT SANDON.

Private W. Allsop, who is on Huai leave with the Nineteenth Reinforcements, was farewelled at Sandon on Saturday evening. The gathering, which was presided over by Mr A. B. Eglinton, was not by any means as largely attended as it should he on such occasions. These men are making fa greater sacrifice than we will ever be able to repaj' and no man who has the 'welfare of these gallant boys at heart can genuinely make an excuse time after time, and be absent from such farewells. Surely the great Josses we have sustained recently must impress tha most indifferent and make them realise the price that the New Zealand boys alone are paying for our safety, freedom and prosperity. They fight and fall while we prosper and enjoy life under the old flag that is and will be kept flying by our heroes. Yet there are a large section, not only in this district but in every community, who will not sacrifice one evenig a month of their time and pleasure to thank and appreciate by their attendance, the boys with whom we too often make the final handshake. Private Allsop was the recipient of a silver wristlet watch. The presentation was made by Mr W. J. Cruncher, who in an appropriate speech, expressed th© best wishes, God speed and a safe return on behalf of the residents of the district. Endorsement and personal appreciation was also expressed by Messrs H. J. Eagan, W. E. Percae, H. McMauaway. J. E. Walker, J. H. Perrett and J. Anderson.
