TAIHAPE NOTES.

The following members of the Senior Cadets, after the final trial shoot on Thursday, have been chosen for the team to compete in the competitions at Palmerston on December 2nd: —Colour-Sergeant Timbs, Taihape; Corporals J. Addis, Taihape, and J. S. Thompson, Taoroa; Privates McClure and Welch, Taihape, and McDonald, Mataroa. Emergencies: Privates Eaton and Oornford.

Sir Joseph Ward addressed a large enthusiastic gathering at' the railway station platform on Thursday night during the short stay made by the northern express. His remarks were greeted with tumultuous applause and as the train drew out, three hearty cheers were given for Sir Joseph and Lady Ward. Mrand Mrs Phillip Snowden, who are at present touring the Dominion in the interests of prohibition, will address the Taihape public on Monday, 7th. A collection is to be taken up in aid of the patriotic fund.

A meeting of shareholders and others interested in the Otaihape Freezing Company is called for December 9th in the Town Hall. The main business will be to review the progress made by the Company in the past and the advisability of proceeding at once with the erection of the plant in order that freezing operations may be commenced in December, 1915. Although the war caused a great depression at the inception of the Company, the farmers are now faced with an abnormally good season, and the directors are fully confident that shareholders will meet their obligations and allow of the commencement of the works on a thoroughly sound footing. A committee meeting of the Talhape Tennis Club was held on Thursday night. Present: Dr. Barnett (chairman), Messrs Jones, Ongley, Absolum, Barkman, McLaughlan, and Thompson. The contract for repairing the courts was reported to be well advanced. The official opening day was fixed for December sth, to which the members of adjacent clubs are heartily invited. It was decided to commence a ladder competition under rules drawn up by the match committee. The handicap competitions are to start as soon as sufficient nominations are received. Accounts amounting to £2l were passed for payment. The Bowling Olub’s second contest for the “Feathers” was played on Thursday afternoon, the holders (Messrs James. Somerville. Oook and McKenzie) retaining the trophy, scoring 26 points to 9. The first competition for the “Spurs” trophy (full rink) commenced on Saturday afternoon. The Club is sending a team to Palmerston on Wednesday to compete for the Hum Cup, a trophy presented by Mr Hum, formerly of Taihape. Some 50 players took pait in the Railway Social Club’s euchre tournament held on Friday evening. The lady’s prize, a fine set of carvers, was won by Mrs J. Humphreys. In the men’s division, the prize, a pocket-book presented by Mr Wilson, was secured by Mr R. Feasey. An excellent supper was provided by the committee. On Friday night members of the Taihape Times staff met to bid farewell to Mr lan Mackaj', who is severing his connection with the paper. The manager, Mr H. R. Hill, on behalf of the staff, presented Mi’ Mackay with a case of Loewe pipes, at the same time eulogising the good fellowship that existed between the reo pient and the rest of the staff and wished him success in the future. The guest of the evening responded, thanking then? for their generous gift and kind words accompanying it, and expressing regret at parting with so many friends. Mr Mackay leaves for Wellington in about a week.
