DOMINION’S POPULATION.

A return of population published in the current Gazette supples the following particulars:— Estimated population, exclusive of Maoris, on December 81st, 1912, 558 213 males, 499,415 females; total 1,053,627. Total increase during 1912, 15,990 males. 16,145 females; total 32,085. Estimated population, exclusive of Maoris, etc., on December 81st, 1918, 569,103 males, 515,960 females, total 1,084.663. Maori population, census, 1911, 28,475 males, 28,869 female*, total 49,844. Population of Oook and other Pacific Islands annexed in 1901, census, 1911, 649 males, 6149 females, total 13,692.

Total estimated population of the Dominion on December 31st, 1918, 603,036 males, 545,078 females, total 1,147,104 Estimated mean population of New Zealand, exclusive of Maoris and Oook and other Pacific Islands, for the year 1918, 661,167 males, 507,488 females, total 1,068,645. Births registered in 1918, 14,428 males, 13,507 females, total 27,985. Deaths registered in 1913, -5869 males, 4250 females, total 10,119 Excess of births over deaths 8559 males, 9257 females, total 17,816. Arrivals in the Dominion daring 1918, 25,891 males, 18.697 females, total 44,588.

Departures from the Dominion during 1913, 18,560 males, 11,809 females, total 80,869. Excess of arrivals over departures 7331 males, 6888 females, total 14,3’9.

Chinese.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on December 31, 1918, was estimated to be 2516, of whom 112 were females. Remarks. —Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 33,035, or at the rate of 8.04 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 17,816, an excess of arrivals over departures 14,219. The birth-rate for the Dominion in 1913 was 26.14 per 1000 of mean population, and the death-rate 9.47, as against 26.48 and 8.87 respectively in 1912.

The deaths in 1913 (10,119) were more than the number registered in ,1913 (9214) by 905, and the rata par 1000 rose from 8,87 to 9.47.

The number of marriages, excluding those contracted between Maoris, solemnised in 1918 is estimated afr 9050, giving a rate of 847 per 1000 of the mean population, against 91.49 and 8.81, the actual number and rate in 1912, The fluctuations of the birth, death, and marriage rates for the last ten years are as under;— Tor ICOO of population.
