HON. JAMES ALLEN.

Per Press Association. Dunedin, December 9. The Hon. Jas. Allen, Finance and Defence Minister, was accorded a farewell by the citizens of Dunedin , to-day on the occasion of his cfe- * parture for London, Eulogistic speeches were delivered by the Mayor (Mr Wilson), Hom.J. Fergus, Mr J. London (President.of the Chamber of Commerce), and Major Ritchie. In the course of his reply, Mr Allen said he was being sent to tiro Old Country and believed he was going with the approval and endorsement of the people of New Zealand. He thought a man coming into office should go to the great money markets of the world and. becomeracquainted with matters on the spot. He was proud it was given, tq him ' to go to England at such an opportune moment, and hear what the Home authorities had to say on the great questions of the day, especially the question of defence. He was glad of the opportunity to go to England for another reason. There were those who had been speaking of us in slighting and degrading tones, and he thought it was time someone should say that what was being published about us was not true.
