The mutton slaughtermen’s strike is off, and a number of the strikers are working, but not for the Carcase Butchers’ Association, whose members insisted Ton the men killing and dressing nine sheep hourly. THE GAS TROUBLE. The position of the threatened gas strike is unaltered. The ballot papers have been locked in a secret place. The gas employees’ Council met, but refused to divulge- what occurred at theoineeting. Referring to the Gas Bill, about which the Assembly and the Legislative Council do not agree, the secretary declares the union is now uninterested in the Bill’s fate. “Surely,” he said, “all our trouble is how to get an extra shilling daily.” MAYOR CONGRATULATES MINISTER. Newfch, Mayor of Waihi, has wired to the Minister as follows:—’“Congratulate yon on decision in reference to Federation - ists’ request for inquiry into Waihi affairs. I feel assured tiiat such inquiry is unnecessary as the statements made in urging it were outrageous misrepresentations, and the issue referred to will he settled in a Court of|Justice.
