A HANDCUFF EXPERT.

POLICE BAFFLED. Per Press Association. Whangarei, November 4. Huston, with four aliases, was before the Court to-day on two charges of burglary , and two of breaking custody. Daring the hearing while writing he freed himself from the patent American spring handcuffs and then roared out laughing at the police and dete*p tives. Another search did not reveal any possible instrument - that he could use to assist .himself. The detectives and police are baffled. Huston will not say how he accomplished it. The,prisoner Huston was before the Court all day, and was committed on three charges of burglary, theft, and two of breaking from custody. Huston submitted the detective to a satirical examination- on the search that was made wli en a knife was found concealed with which be cut his way out of the cell. The prisoner, was carefully watched this afternoon, as it vyas stated he Would repeat his morning’s performance and release himself from the handcuffs. • A solicitor, Mr Edmunds, at the close of the first case, declared himself counsel for the prisoner, and asked tor an interview. The police objected as counsel was not engaged by Huston. Mr Edmunds" then addressed the Bench which declined to allow the interview. Mr Edmunds then handed the prisoner, a paper, which was quickly snatched by a. detective." A scuwfe/ ensued between the police and/ Mr Edmunds, who finally , was ", thrown over a chair. Mr, Edmunds, appeared on two latex* cases against Huston,; then abruptly left the Court without comment: 1

When taking the prisoner from the Court to the cells to-night a crowd hooted the police and cheers were given for Huston.
