Per Press Association. Wellington, October 14. In order to ascertain the extent to which the reported drought in the Philippines would probably influence the hemp market, that is, if current values were likely to be maintained, the Secretary' of Agriculture, Industries aud Commerce cabled to H. M. Consul at Manila to the following effect: “The sharp rise in prices of hemn in Loudon is said to be due to the decreased output of the Philippines. Kindly cable causes and whether likely to continue. ” To this the following reply has been received: “No shortage of arrivals in hemp here at present, but an eventual decrease of possibly 100,000 bales this year owing to the drought last "spring, is anticipated providing the present demand continues. ”
