KILLING BY “HEALING.”

New York, June 6,

United States Senator Nixon, a multi-millionaire Nevada rancher and mine-owner, who started life as a farmer’s boy, died in Washington lass night, after three days of Uhristian Science treatment for meningitis, ordered by telegraph by bis wife.

The eminent medical specialists who were attending him were instructed by Mrs Nixon, while she was harrying ia a special train across the continent, to surrender their paeient to William Campbell, a noted Christian Science “healer,” whose efforts were useless. The fact that Mr Nixon himself was not a Christian Scientist and was unconscious and unable to protest against tbe'dismissal of his doctors, has attracted national attention to the case.

Senator Nixon was operated on for nasal trouble a week ago, but meningitis developed, and his condition became precarious. ® Dr. Harvey Cushing, the most eminent meningitis specialist in the country, who has just accepted the chair of medicine at Harvard University, bad charge of the case. He notified Msr Nison, who was in Nevada, that her husband probably oould not recover.

MrslNixon {[thereupon ordered that her husband should be given over to Campbell, who recently gained notoriety by "claiming that all the Christian Scientists aboard the Titanic were saved becacse of their faith. Campbell began his treatment on Monday, as Mrs Nixon started on her race with death. She wili'not arrive in Washington until to-morrow. Senator Nixon was in a stupor throughout Campbell’s treatment, bnt the doctors believe be could have been Kept alive until Mrs Nixon’s arrival if proper medical efforts had been made. Mrs Nixon joined the followers of Mrs biddy last £year, but could not persuade her husband to follow her, despite her enthusiasm for her new creed. Senators and Clapp, who are Christian Scientists, were instrumental In inducing Campbell to accept charge of the case; Senator Works made a speech in favour of Christian Science in the Senate several months ago. declaring that he was converted because the Christian Scientists cored his wife after the physicians bad abandoned her, and because Christian Science also reclaimed his son from intemperance.
