MANY BUILDINGS BURNT.

About 13.30 this morning at Foxton a fire broke oat In Ball’s tobacconist shop in Msln street, which is separated by a .vacant section from Whyte’s Hotel. Residents numbering about five hundred harried to the scene, and did their utmost to prevent the fire spreading, bnt their efforts were in vain. .Thera is ho. fire brigade ps|propar water supply. A strong southerly wind saved' the hotel-, and the flames travelling northward consumed the following places Ball, tobacconist; Sim■raoads, cycle shop ; Geld berg, jeweller; Park, jeweller and bookseller; Moore, solicitor’s office; Mrs Nye, stasioner; Wanfelyn, fruiterer; Wells, baker ;'and Styles, drapery store.

Palmerston North, July 23. The third disastrous fire In two. months visited Foxton just after midnight, when the buildings mentioned above were destroyed. The firs commenced in the billiard room of Ball's, sad despite the efforts of a bucket brigade st swept She whole block of wooden buildings on the eastern' side of the street. They were all one storey buildings. The outside Wall of Style’s large shop was of corrugated iron which largely assisted in preventing \ the fire spreading to the Presbyterian - ’ Church, an old wooden building with a shingle roof, 40 feet awaythe church gone nothing could have saved the police station, residence and court house, ana probably the new town hall. Whyte’s Hotel web next to Ball’s, where the fire started, tout a south easterly wind drove the flames in the opposite dirsc.ioii. The buildings were owned by Mrs Thynne, Mrs Austin and G. H. Styles. Mrs* Nye-and Betty wore burned Out in, jlhe previous big fire, and ware occupying temporary premises. A quantity, of goods were .salvaged by a large crowd of people. A coincidence in connection with tbs conflagration was that Snpfe. Barnard, of Palmerston Fite Brigade, was in Foxton yesterday submitting a scheme to the Borough Council for fire prevention. The fire burned, itself out about 2.30. The insurances are not yet available. The same block was burned down in 1903.
