Yesterday the managers cabled advising arrangements to’play Wellington on the following Saturday, and instructing the team to sail yestai-eve. Before the managers had time to take steps to comply, the team decided that if St had to leave yeater-eve it would uot play yesterday’s match. Tbs managers advised the New Zealand League of the position. The President of the New South Wales League cancelled the banquet to ba given to the New Zealanders tomofrow night as a protest against their attitude on the ground that: he could not honour plavers acting insabard fnaiely. South Island Rugby football match was played here to-day in beautiful weather. The game resulted la a win for the North by 13 points to 8. After the recent rain the ground was a bit ■ heavy and slippery in places. Lack of was noticeable in the South Island team in the early stages of the.game, and except that the North Island forwards were slightly better than the South, the teams were fairly evenly matched. No doubt the batter team won. About eight minutes after the game started, E. Roberts, Taranaki, scored the first try behind the posts, O’Leary converting. Twenty minutes later, Alexander (South) got dyer the line, and Doell converted from a difficult angle. Towards the end of the first half, Alexander again got over as the result of a Southern rush, but'Doell failed to add the points. Soon after the second half ‘ commenced, Stchr scored for tha North, ;bnt O’Leary’s attempt to convert was a failure When halfwav through the spell McKenzie potted a neat goal for she North.
