United Press Association.—By Electrio Telegraph.— Copyright. New York, January 1.
James J. Hill, a railway magnate, in an article in The World’s Work, says there is small prospect of the success of American trade in thhe Orient, now that the Chinese are awaking, as they are endowed with tremendous resources. The Chinese were working at wages with which westerners cannot compete and were likely to become competitors with Europe and America by buying in their own markets. Silver bars were selling abroad on a gold basis. The Cihnese could offer goods at prices which no tariffs could affect nor onr people keep out.
